BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish school of the first half of the 16th century.
"The adoration of the Magi".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 66 x 51 cm.
This scene of long pictorial tradition, is developed in an architectural environment in ruins, symbol of the decadence of the old world that yields its place to the new Christian era. In the center of the composition, the Virgin Mary holds the Child Jesus, presented naked to emphasize his humanity. Joseph appears behind, in a contemplative attitude, while the three Wise Men, each with their characteristic features, kneel or bow in adoration, offering their gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The artist emphasizes the visual hierarchy through the arrangement of the figures: the Child becomes the focal point, illuminated by a subtle light that seems to emanate from his own body. The colors are rich and contrasting, with a predominance of reds, ochers and dark tones that give depth and solemnity to the scene. The background landscape, populated by figures and cavalcades, adds dynamism and narrative context, integrating the intimate moment with the distant procession of those accompanying the Magi.
The Flemish school is characterized in this period by its extraordinary attention to detail, its mastery in the use of light and its meticulousness in the representation of textures and objects. In this oil painting, we can appreciate the precision with which the fabrics are represented, the metallic reflections of the chests and goblets, and even the hair and beards of the characters, testimony of the meticulous tradition initiated by masters such as Jan van Eyck in the 15th century.
During the 16th century, Flemish painting underwent a process of transition that combined the late Gothic heritage with the influences of the Italian Renaissance. This is reflected in the interest in perspective, the use of landscapes as backdrops and the search for greater naturalism in the human figures. However, the Flemish school maintained its distinctive taste for detailed narrative, complex scenes and the symbolic charge of each element.
Technically, the use of oil on panel allowed artists to work with glazes and successive layers, achieving effects of light and volume unprecedented in other painting techniques of the time. This technical mastery was so influential that it spread throughout Europe, marking the evolution of religious and secular painting in the rest of the continent.
