These four paintings show how landscape acquired a central role in 19th century Spanish painting under the influence of Romanticism. In the land landscapes, ruins, roads and mountains convey an evocative vision of history and nature, while in the seascapes the sky, light and horizon express ideas of travel, melancholy and contemplation. The human figures appear small before the grandeur of the surroundings, reinforcing the romantic sensibility.
These paintings, as a whole, show how 19th century Spanish artists fully assumed the guidelines of European Romanticism, but reinterpreted them from their own imaginary: a nature that combines the picturesque with the sublime, the everyday with the legendary, the real with the evocative.
