BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

17th-century Sevillian school.
"Saint Rose of Lima."
Oil on canvas.
Relined. In good condition.
Measurements: 170.5 x 115 cm, 198 x 143 cm (frame).

The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated on clouds with the Infant Jesus in her arms, in a heavenly vision appearing before Saint Rose of Lima, who is kneeling in an attitude of profound devotion. The Child extends a rose toward the saint, while she receives it with reverence and mystical contemplation. The scene unfolds in a garden abundant with roses, a symbolic element closely linked to the Peruvian saint and her very name. The luminous atmosphere, the delicate color palette, and the soft modeling of the figures contribute to creating an image of a contemplative and devotional nature.

The work is part of the spread of the cult of Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617), the first saint born in the Americas and one of the most important figures in Hispanic spirituality. Beatified in 1668 and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, her cult spread with extraordinary rapidity throughout the territories of the Spanish Monarchy, becoming a symbol of the universality of the Catholic faith and the religious prominence of the American colonies.

During the last decades of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th, the image of Saint Rose gained enormous popularity in both Spain and the Americas. The Dominican orders were particularly active in promoting her veneration, commissioning numerous paintings for churches, convents, and private collections. Depictions of the saint receiving roses from the Child Jesus or being crowned by Christ and the Virgin Mary are among the most frequently repeated iconographic motifs.

This type of religious painting was widely disseminated in Spain in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, especially following the canonization of new saints associated with religious orders. In addition to decorating churches and convents, many of these works were intended for private devotion and formed part of the domestic oratories of nobles, civil servants, wealthy merchants, and members of the emerging urban bourgeoisie. The growing demand for devotional images encouraged the production of medium- and small-format paintings, accessible to a broader audience than that of the major ecclesiastical patrons. In the case of Saint Rose of Lima, her status as the first American saint and her close ties to the Dominican Order helped make her image a symbol of religious prestige and adherence to the spirituality of the Spanish Monarchy, being especially prized by devout collectors and convent communities both in Spain and in the American territories.

From a stylistic point of view, the work displays features consistent with the Sevillian school of the late 17th or early 18th century. The gentle idealism of the faces, the elegance of the drapery, the rich color palette, and the serene atmosphere recall styles derived from Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and his wide circle of followers. After the master’s death, his pictorial language continued to dominate Sevillian religious art for several decades, particularly in Marian images and mystical scenes intended to foster private devotion.
