BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Attributed to FRANCESCO MONTEMEZZANO (Verona, 1555–c. 1602), circa 1570.
“Portrait of a Lady.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 101 x 82 cm; 133 x 112 cm (frame).
This portrait of a woman is part of the tradition of Venetian painting from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, displaying clear stylistic traits associated with Francesco Montemezzano, a prominent follower of Paolo Veronese and one of the most highly regarded portraitists of his generation. The work depicts a woman of mature age whose presence commands attention with serenity and dignity. The carefully composed pose, combined with the richness of her attire and the refinement of the details, creates an image of remarkable social distinction, in keeping with the ideals of representation of the Venetian nobility and upper middle class of the time.
Veronese’s influence is evident in the brilliance of the colors and the taste for sumptuous fabrics, though reinterpreted through a more intimate and personal sensibility. Montemezzano adopts the rich color palette characteristic of his master but translates it into a language of his own—less monumental and closer to direct observation of the model. E
The execution reveals a swift and confident brushstroke, applied with a generous amount of paint that lends vitality to the surfaces and a rich tactile quality to the depiction. Far from a meticulous and cold description, the artist constructs the face through vibrant painting, capable of conveying the model’s life experience and personality. This ability to combine physical presence and psychological introspection was one of the qualities most appreciated by contemporary art historians, including Carlo Ridolfi, who particularly praised Montemezzano’s skills as a portraitist.
A disciple or close collaborator of the great Paolo Veronese, Francesco Montemezzano worked in Verona, Venice, and various towns in the Venetian Terraferma. Although he primarily focused on religious painting, his portraiture demonstrates a special sensitivity for capturing the personality of his subjects. His work occupies a unique position within the artistic landscape of northern Italy, constituting a valuable testament to the transition from the chromatic splendor of the Venetian Renaissance to the new pictorial sensibilities that would mark the beginning of the Baroque period.
