The depiction of Christ as the Salvator Mundi is one of the most recognizable and widespread motifs in El Greco’s work during his final years in Toledo. In this painting, Christ is depicted in a half-length, frontal pose, standing alone against a neutral background, with his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing and his left hand holding the cross, which rests on the orb—attributes that identify him as the Savior of the World. The model has its roots in the Byzantine tradition, particularly in the image of the Pantocrator, with which El Greco was thoroughly familiar from his early training as an icon painter in Crete. However, by transposing this formula into the context of late 16th- and early 17th-century Spain, the artist transformed it through a fully Mannerist style. The extraordinary success of this model is demonstrated by the various versions preserved in major collections. The Museo Nacional del Prado holds a “Savior,” dated between 1608 and 1614 and from the Apostolado de Almadrones, cataloged as a work by El Greco and his workshop. The museum itself notes its connection to the versions created for other apostolates and highlights the workshop’s role in the reproduction of this famous prototype. The success of this composition also explains the existence of other versions and variations related to the model, held in institutions such as the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh or the Galleria Civica Parmeggiani in Reggio Emilia. This widespread circulation sheds light on the workings of El Greco’s workshop, where certain particularly successful models were reproduced and adapted to meet the demand for devotional images.
Doménikos Theotokópoulos is considered one of the great artists of the Spanish Renaissance and a forerunner of certain features of modern art. Painter, sculptor, and architect of Greek origin who spent much of his career in Spain. He was born in Crete, studied in Venice, and later moved to Spain, where he pursued his career in Toledo.
