The composition stands out for its light and luminous color palette and for the elegant, monumental figure of the angel on the left. The delicacy of the figures, their colorful robes, and the serene atmosphere reveal the influence of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, Verwilt’s primary stylistic influence and likely his teacher. Poelenburgh, trained in Utrecht and associated with the Italianate tradition, developed a style of painting biblical and mythological subjects characterized by bright light, idealized figures, and a special sensitivity to beauty.
These features suggest that the work was likely painted in the 1660s, during Verwilt’s mature period. In contrast to the brown and earthy tones predominant in the paintings of some of his Rotterdam contemporaries from the 1630s and 1640s, such as Cornelis Saftleven or Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh, here the architecture is relegated to the background, and it is the figures and their brilliant garments that define the composition. Stable interiors and Nativity scenes were also explored by Rotterdam artists such as Abraham Hondius and Adam Isaaksz. Colonia, although Verwilt approaches the subject with a particularly elegant and luminous sensibility, giving the supernatural presence of the angels a leading role.
François Verwilt was born in Rotterdam and was initially trained by his father, Adriaen Verwilt. His body of work encompassed history paintings, portraits, Italian-inspired landscapes, and genre scenes. Although he was primarily active in Rotterdam, he is also documented in Middelburg, Vlissingen, and Veere, and he also worked as an art dealer. He died in Rotterdam in 1691.
