This work depicts Saint Jerome in his study, one of the most evocative iconographies of Dutch Baroque painting and, significantly, one of Christian van Donck’s favorite subjects. The saint is portrayed not so much in his ascetic capacity as in the image of a wise humanist, surrounded by books, writing implements, and objects laden with symbolic meaning. The careful setting, the attention to detail in the depiction of objects, and the focused lighting all contribute to creating an intimate and quiet scene, dominated by meditation and study.

The composition’s iconographic richness is particularly striking. The skull, the hourglass, and the globe introduce an obvious Vanitas motif: they remind the viewer of the fleeting nature of time, the inevitability of death, and the transitory nature of earthly possessions. Opposite them, the quill, inkwell, and books evoke the saint’s intellectual activity and his translation of the Bible. In this way, the painting transcends the religious episode to become a profound Baroque reflection on knowledge, time, and the human condition.

Particularly noteworthy is the presence of the globe, an exceptional element in depictions of Saint Jerome in his study. Professor Marwan Rashed of the Sorbonne University in Paris has specifically pointed out the rarity of this attribute within Hieronymian iconography, a circumstance that lends this composition a special uniqueness.

Christian van Donck remains an enigmatic figure in 17th-century Dutch painting. Signed and dated works from between 1653 and 1678 are known, although very little documentary evidence regarding his career has survived. He was likely active in Amsterdam during the third quarter of the 17th century and showed a particular predilection for depictions of Saint Jerome and vanitas compositions, as well as for the meticulous rendering of jewelry, precious metals, and sumptuous objects. His work also reveals a stylistic affinity with Salomon Koninck (1609–1656), a leading figure in the Amsterdam art scene.
