Carl Milton Jensen is inscribed in the prestigious Danish landscape school, a current that reached an extraordinary development throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, consolidating an artistic identity of its own and deeply linked to the territory.
The decisive impulse came from the art historian Niels Laurits Høyen, professor at the Academy, who encouraged his students to look to their immediate surroundings and find in the national landscape a legitimate source of inspiration. His influence marked a whole generation of artists, among them Johan Thomas Lundbye, Christen Købke, P. C. Skovgaard, Dankvart Dreyer, Louis Gurlitt and Martinus Rørbye, who took on the landscape not only as a pictorial motif, but also as an expression of cultural identity.
Following this tradition, Jensen and his contemporaries turned their gaze to the fields, coasts and skies of Denmark, as well as to the daily life of its inhabitants. His works do not merely depict nature: they turn it into a stage of memory, belonging and national sensibility, capturing the changing atmosphere of the north with a mixture of lyricism, close observation and restrained emotion.
