BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

PATRICK NASMYTH (Edinburgh, 1787 - London, 1831).
"Landscape," 1812.
Oil on panel.
Signed and dated.
It has slight craquelure. Reverse of the board with marks and rubbing.
Measurements: 41 × 50.5 cm.; 54 × 62 cm. with frame.

Landscape of serene country atmosphere, in which Patrick Nasmyth deploys a meticulous and balanced language, attentive to both the naturalistic description and the poetic construction of the environment. The work reflects Nasmyth's taste for landscapes in the Dutch tradition, especially for models such as Hobbema and Ruysdael, visible in the precision of the trees, the presence of the hut, the delicacy of the sky and the harmony between nature and rural life. The date of 1812 places the piece at an early stage, shortly after his move to London, a time when the artist consolidated his interest in the English landscape.

Patrick Nasmyth was a leading Scottish landscape painter, son of Alexander Nasmyth, considered a key figure in Scottish landscape painting. Trained in the family artistic environment, he developed a body of work centered on rural views of Scotland and England, characterized by their detail, tranquil atmosphere and naturalistic sensibility. His work is represented in institutions such as the Tate, the National Galleries of Scotland, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Government Art Collection.
