DESCRIPTION
RAMÓN MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894).
“Seascape.”
Oil on canvas.
Shows slight signs of restoration.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 33 x 55 cm.
In this painting, Martí Alsina presents a sweeping panorama in which the distinctly horizontal format does not detract from the depth of the space, allowing it to breathe through a masterful use of parallel planes. As is typical of his work, Martí Alsina creates here the impression of a window opening onto a moving horizon.
Initially trained in Philosophy and Letters and later at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Ramón Martí Alsina was a pioneer in the practice of plein air painting and the founder of the modern Catalan school. His exposure to French painting—particularly the work of Courbet, Delacroix, and Vernet—proved decisive for the introduction of realism into the Spanish art scene. A professor at the Escuela de La Lonja and mentor to prominent artists such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Torrescassana, he produced an extensive body of work. He exhibited regularly in Barcelona, Madrid, and Paris, receiving significant recognition at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions. In his later years, his brushwork became increasingly free and vibrant, resembling Impressionism in some respects. His work is now preserved in prominent collections and institutions such as the Prado Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
