FRANCISCO DOMINGO MARQUÉS (Valencia, 1842 – Madrid, 1920).
“Interior with a Figure.”
Oil on panel.

Measurements: 17 x 14 cm; 37 x 33 cm (frame).
Domingo Marqués began his training at the San Carlos School in Valencia, where he studied under Rafael Montesinos, who instilled in him a deep admiration for Ribera. In 1864, he moved to Madrid to complete his training at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, and in 1868 he was awarded the coveted scholarship to Rome. He participated in several editions of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, winning first prize in 1871. After a period as a professor at the San Carlos School—during which he taught Josep Benlliure Gil—he moved to Paris, where he lived from 1875 to 1914, producing small works characterized by meticulous detail and vibrant color, which reveal a certain Impressionist influence. Upon his return to Spain, he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1917. Domingo Marqués’s mature style is rooted in the naturalist tradition of the Baroque, and his brushwork breaks down the pictorial material to focus his attention on color and light. His works are represented in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Valencia, Málaga, and Asturias, the Hispanic Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, among many others.
