The work conveys Modest Urgell’s sensibility for landscape in a humble and quiet rural setting. The narrow vertical format is dominated by whitewashed walls, whose surfaces are built up with loose, impasto brushstrokes in shades of ochre, gray, and white. In the background, a figure walks down the street enveloped in a misty atmosphere, while the bird in the foreground introduces a subtle narrative element.

Rather than meticulously describing the architecture, Urgell focuses his attention on light, texture, and atmospheric depth. The contrast between the solidity of the nearby walls and the dissolution of distant forms creates a restrained scene in which an everyday motif takes on a marked poetic dimension.

A student of Ramon Martí i Alsina at the Llotja School and later associated with the Olot landscape painting circle, Modest Urgell developed a vision of nature recognizable for its restraint and introspective tone. He was a professor of perspective and landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and a founder of the Artistic and Literary Society. His work is represented in the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Prado Museum.
