The work up for auction is particularly representative of Franz Theodor Aerni’s oeuvre, both for its Italian subject matter and for its combination of landscape and genre scene. Set in Rome, as indicated by the signature itself, it depicts a sunlit street flanked by walls, gardens, and lush Mediterranean vegetation, dominated by the characteristic Italian cypresses and pines. In the foreground, a woman with a child riding a donkey, accompanied by peasants and animals, introduces a folk-art element that enlivens the composition and reflects Aerni’s interest in everyday Italian life. The work thus synthesizes two fundamental aspects of Aerni’s art: his training as a landscape painter and his fascination with Italy, the country where he spent a significant part of his career. The result is fully in keeping with the late-19th-century international taste for picturesque Italian views, although Aerni infuses them with vitality through the human presence and his agile, luminous brushwork.

Franz Theodor Aerni specialized primarily in landscapes, cityscapes, and genre scenes; his career was closely linked to Italy and, especially, to Rome. He was first trained by Johann Joseph Geisser in Lausanne and, between 1872 and 1874, studied with Adeodato Malatesta at the Academy of Fine Arts in Modena. He later settled in Rome, where he joined the circle of Germanic artists and studied at the Accademia di San Luca with the landscape painter Salomon Corrodi, with whom he also collaborated. A pivotal moment in his career was his study trips to Egypt and Cyprus in 1878–1879, undertaken alongside Hermann Corrodi. From these trips, he produced numerous sketches that broadened his repertoire to include Orientalist subjects. However, a significant portion of his body of work is devoted to Italy, featuring landscapes of Rome and Naples, street scenes, markets, and scenes of daily life—generally rendered with a luminous, detailed style and a marked interest in architecture and setting. Aerni also participated in major Swiss national exhibitions during the final decades of the 19th century, presenting works with Italian themes such as *Tiberufer*, *Aquädukt des Nero*, and *Strassenmotiv in Gaeta*.
