José Vilató was formed in the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi of Barcelona, and from his debut in 1932 he took part in collective exhibitions and celebrated individual in Spain, Barcelona and Switzerland. With a scholarship from the French government, he settled in Paris in 1946, where he frequented the likes of Matisse, Miró, Braque and, above all, his uncle Picasso. He also worked in sculpture and mural painting, the latter discipline in which his works for the church of Coscojuela de Sobrarbe (1944) and the CSF factory in Paris (1960) stand out. In 1971 a posthumous anthological exhibition was dedicated to him in Barcelona. He is currently represented in the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Cabinet of Prints of the National Library and the MACBA in Barcelona, among other public and private collections.
