Daniel Merino was a painter and engraver from Madrid who trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid and debuted with a solo exhibition at the age of sixteen at the Sala Minerva del Círculo de Bellas Artes. During the 1960s, his work was exhibited in various Spanish cities, obtaining in 1962 the Extraordinary Prize in the IV Youth Art Contest of Madrid and being selected for the National Exhibition of Fine Arts.
His international projection began to consolidate from 1966, after traveling through France, Belgium and the Netherlands, and being distinguished in the exhibition "Painters of Africa". In 1967 he received the Prize of the General Directorate of Fine Arts and the Zaragoza Prize in his IV Biennial, which boosted his presence in individual and collective exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia.
Throughout his career, he was awarded numerous prizes, among them the City of Murcia Prize (1974), the Medal of Honor of the Goya Drawing Prize (1982), the National Prize of the Caja de Ahorros de Guadalajara (1987) and the First Prize of the IV BMW Painting Contest (1989), among many others.
His stylistic evolution transited from an initial post-impressionism towards a magical realism of marked originality, characterized by an exceptional pictorial technique and an overflowing imagination. In the graphic field, he illustrated several important literary works, such as Viejo y Nuevo Madrid (1986), El corazón la sabe (1987), Coplas de Jorge Manrique (1993) and Tauromagia (1998).
His work is represented in institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ibiza, the Camón Aznar Museum of Zaragoza, the National Chalcography, the National Library and the Palace of Congress, as well as in prestigious public and private collections. He was appointed Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Immaculate Conception of Valladolid.
