BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
VICTOR MARAIS-MILTON (Puteaux, France, 1872-1948).
"Peasant girl burning the weeds".

Victor Marais-Milton was a painter known primarily for his genre scenes with an academic, detailed style and often with a touch of humor or satire. He is highly regarded for his depictions of cardinals, bishops and other clergy in everyday situations, often at leisure or with an ironic undertone. As can be seen in the work on offer, in which a Central European peasant woman burns weeds, his painting is characterized by meticulous execution and a high level of detail.
At the beginning of his career, Victor Marais-Milton lived in Paris, but later moved to Sèvres, where he remained until his death. He studied in Jonchère's workshop, but has also been linked to Ernest Meissonnier, who by the end of his career had become a master of genre painting and an inspiration to many artists while working as a teacher in his own workshop for the École des Beaux-Arts. He presented his first work at the Salon of 1898, where he presented a portrait of Mademoiselle Marguerite Picard of the Opera. Today his work can be found in the Wigan Arts and Heritage Service in the United Kingdom and in other French museums, as well as in private collections.
