The still life in the Spanish painting of the first half of the 20th century experienced a notable formal and conceptual renovation. Without abandoning the solid tradition inherited from the Golden Age, many artists incorporated modern languages -from post-impressionism to renewed realism and even cubism and noucentista art- to reinterpret everyday objects. Composition tended toward greater structural simplification, with special attention to geometry, the relationship between volumes, and the organization of pictorial space. At the same time, the interest in material qualities and in a light that, more than describing, builds introspective atmospheres was accentuated. In this context, the still life was consolidated as a privileged genre for artistic experimentation, allowing painters to articulate a dialogue between tradition and modernity without losing the technical rigor that characterized the Spanish school.
