ALBERTO GÁLVEZ (Germany, 1963).
"Female nude", 1999.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated on the back.
Measurements: 81 x 65 cm.
The work presents a nude female figure, of serene and frontal anatomy, located in an open space that refers to a marine horizon, evoking in a subtle way the heritage of classical painting and, in particular, the genre of the idealized nude that has in The Birth of Venus one of its most emblematic referents. However, far from a simple historicist reinterpretation, Gálvez introduces an element of conceptual dislocation: the figure emerges from a geometric structure, a sort of pond or container, inside which plants and flowers grow. This resource generates an ambiguous, almost dreamlike atmosphere, where the natural and the artificial intertwine. The woman does not fully inhabit the landscape, but seems to be inserted into it as a displaced object, reinforcing the idea of estrangement that runs through the artist's work.
From the technical point of view, the painting reveals a precise and contained execution. The modeling of the body is constructed through soft layers of color, with a palette dominated by greens, ochers and muted blues, which contribute to a silent atmosphere suspended in time. The line is clear and controlled, emphasizing the volumetry without falling into hyperrealism, while the treatment of the background, flatter and more schematic, accentuates the sculptural presence of the figure. In iconographic terms, the gesture of the hand, one on the chest and the other extended, suggests an open narrative, of symbolic or allegorical character, which invites interpretation. The female figure thus becomes an archetype rather than an individual portrait, in tune with Gálvez's interest in recovering universal images and recontextualizing them in a contemporary language.
Alberto Gálvez is a contemporary Spanish painter whose inspiration comes from identifiable archetypal images present in classical historical painting. Gálvez is a leading figure within his generation of artists in Europe who have returned to the figurative tradition, in which a precise delineation of figures and objects is projected onto the canvas through a complex narrative with allegorical overtones. The artist's ability to displace familiar objects and reinvent them within an innovative and contemporary context impels the viewer to perceive a new reality. Alberto Gálvez was born and lives on the Mediterranean coast, in Valencia, Spain, where he is also a professor of Painting at the renowned Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València. His works are part of numerous private and corporate collections internationally.
