DESCRIPTION
JOAN ABELLÓ PRAT (Mollet del Vallés, Barcelona, 1922 - Barcelona, 2008).
"Marina", Cadaqués, 1987.
Oil on canvas
Signed in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and located on the back.
Measurements: 61 x 73 cm; 86 x 98 cm (frame).
In this work, Abelló captures the force of the marine landscape by means of an energetic and impastoed brushstroke, where the color and the matter construct the scene. The sea, the absolute protagonist, is represented in constant movement, with a vibrant range of blues and whites that transmit the intensity of the waves, while the boat introduces a point of tension and scale in the composition.
A painter trained in Barcelona, a disciple of Pere Pruna, Abelló developed a work with impressionist roots that evolved towards a material and expressive language. He exhibited internationally in cities such as Paris, London, New York and Moscow. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. His work is represented in institutions such as the MACBA, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Courtauld Collection in London and the Vatican Museum.
