José María Rodríguez-Acosta was an outstanding Spanish painter, illustrator and engraver whose artistic career developed between the figurative tradition and the aesthetic renovation of the Spanish contemporary art of the second half of the 20th century. Deeply linked to his hometown, Granada, he played an important institutional role as president of the Board of Trustees of the Rodriguez-Acosta Foundation and deputy director of the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, actively contributing to the dissemination and conservation of Spanish artistic heritage.
His training began early under the influence of his uncle, the painter José María Rodríguez-Acosta, and continued in the workshop of Joaquín Valverde before entering the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. Throughout his career he participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His first individual exhibition took place at the Casa de los Tiros in 1957, initiating an exhibition trajectory that would lead him to participate in ARCO in 1982 and in the exhibition La estampa contemporánea en España held at the Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid in 1988. His work was widely recognized by critics and art institutions, obtaining important awards such as the First Medal of the National Exhibition of 1960 for the canvas Virtudes teologales, the Prize of the Fine Arts Circle of the XXII Salón del Grabado y la Estampación (1978), the Prize of the Ministry of Culture in the Biennial of Marbella (1983), the International Printmaking Prize of Venice (1986) and the National Prize of Engraving María de Salamanca of the Museum of Contemporary Engraving of Marbella (1997), among others.
