Luciano Ventrone (1942–2021) was a celebrated Italian painter known worldwide for his extraordinary hyperrealistic still lifes. The prestigious art historian Federico Zeri masterfully dubbed him the “Caravaggio of the 20th century,” a title that reflects his absolute mastery of light, color, and chiaroscuro.
Although in his youth he experimented with abstraction, geometric art, and informal painting, his career took a radical turn in the early 1980s. In 1983, after capturing the attention of art critics, he devoted himself entirely to the meticulous study of nature, making still lifes the central focus of his creative universe. He spent the last two decades of his life working in a small town in the Abruzzo region (Collelongo), completely devoted to his canvases until his death in April 2021.

Ventrone’s painting is not a simple copy of reality; he himself defined his approach as an exercise in “realism-abstraction.” His technique was based on a rigorous process: he would set up perfect compositions in his studio and photograph them under extremely precise artificial lighting. Using those images as a basis, he painted such detailed oil-on-canvas renderings of fruits, leaves, and objects that the human eye can barely process them at first glance. The result is a hyperbolic optical illusion where color shines so brightly that it surpasses even the vividness of a traditional photograph.
