The work features humble architecture in the background, brought to life by bold brushstrokes that depict a series of bricks, an arch, and various other elements, combining a range of colors dominated by white and blue—colors also found in the figures. A group of children are depicted in different poses and postures—some playing instruments, some sitting, and others standing; some looking at the viewer, one with their back turned, and so on— maintaining a certain serenity and stillness in their poses, yet suggesting a sense of movement and liveliness more through the brushwork and colors than through their positions and compositional diagonals.
The work stands out for its balanced composition despite being slightly asymmetrical. The painter’s skill is clearly evident in the lines that define the figures, which guide the viewer’s eyes through the main elements of this painting.
As for his technique, it is a distinctive blend of magnificent, almost academic drawing in some areas—reminiscent of examples from the 19th-century neoclassical tradition—alongside a series of details, primarily technical, that evoke certain approaches that emerged from the pictorial avant-garde movements of the late 19th century.
Although born in the province of Córdoba, José González lived in Seville from childhood, where he studied and trained as a painter. After completing his studies, it was also there that he gained critical and public acclaim, which led to numerous successes and awards. Considered one of the great contemporary masters of Sevillian painting, González has developed a visual language marked by a personal sensitivity to color, a masterful handling of light and brushwork, and a skillful use of nuances and glazes. He has mastered a variety of techniques, ranging from oil painting to pastels, tempera, and ceramics, and his watercolors are particularly prized, as his technique takes on a special quality in this medium. His work focuses primarily on his personal vision of Seville—its everyday life and collective memory—approached from a thoroughly modern perspective.
