Jaume Plensa studied at the Llotja School and the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, both in Barcelona. He currently resides in Paris and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has held solo and group exhibitions around the world, notably including a retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000. Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors, such as the Medal of the Order of Arts and Letters, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, and the National Prize for Visual Arts from the Government of Catalonia. His work is featured in leading national and international galleries and art fairs, as well as in major museums in Europe and the United States, such as the MoMA in New York, the Kemper Museum in Kansas, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Palazzo Forti in Verona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
Jaume Plensa’s work centers on the relationship between humans and their environment, as well as with time—with the course of life and history—sometimes questioning the role of art in society and the artist’s position. In this splendid, large-scale piece, the human figure takes center stage. Plensa depicts one of his characteristic male figures—lost in thought and solitary—which draws us into the mystery of human existence and essence. The tactile quality of the technique used, the chiaroscuro effects, and the texture created by the addition of materials such as tar directly appeal to the viewer’s senses, blending intellectual reflection and material sensation into a single artistic message.
