DESCRIPTION
JUAN GUILLERMO GARCÉS SIGAS (Cuba, 1953).
"Sur", 2006.
Oil, wire and thread on canvas.
Measurements: 175 x 195 cm; 185 x 207 cm (frame).
This is a work of great visual and technical power by Cuban artist Juan Guillermo Garcés Sigas. It is a piece that exemplifies contemporary art that fuses realistic figuration with three-dimensional and symbolic elements. Although it is a single large-format canvas, the composition functions as a triptych. It presents three views of the male torso: front, profile and back, allowing for an exhaustive and almost obsessive anatomical study. The artist demonstrates a masterful mastery of oil painting to represent the skin and musculature. However, he breaks this realism with "drips" of paint on the lower part and unfinished areas, which gives it an air of modernity and existentialism. Most distinctive is the use of wire and thread applied directly to the canvas. These structures create cages or nets around the heads, symbolizing the confinement of thought, psychological pressure or the disconnection between the physical body and the mind.
Garcés Sigas is a Cuban artist based in Spain. He is known for delving into the human condition. His works tend to be introspective, exploring identity, pain and the relationship between man and his environment through a language that borders on the metaphysical.
