“As if Hanging from the Sky,” created in 2011, belongs to the series *Esta gran humanidad*, one of the most representative cycles of Gustavo Díaz Sosa’s early work. The composition depicts a multitude of small figures suspended in an undefined space, barely held aloft by fine lines that accentuate the sensation of weightlessness, fragility, and rootlessness. The large central void is a hallmark of the contemporary human condition, marked by uncertainty, alienation, and the search for meaning. With a language of great poetic power and a refined use of color, Díaz Sosa transforms the anonymous crowd into a powerful metaphor for the social and existential dynamics that underpin much of his work. The series *Esta gran humanidad* cemented the artist’s international recognition and foreshadowed the major themes that would define his subsequent career.
A Cuban painter based in Spain, Gustavo Díaz Sosa graduated with a Gold Medal from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, where he later served as a professor of painting. In 2004, he moved to Spain on an artist-in-residence fellowship from Arteleku (San Sebastián), where he completed his training in printmaking, lithography, and screen printing.He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Spain, France, and Germany, and his work is part of major public and private collections, including the U.S. Department of State’s art collection. Gustavo Díaz Sosa’s work is part of prominent public and private collections in Europe and the Americas. Among the institutions that hold works by the artist are the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana (Cuba) and the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies collection, as well as numerous private collections.
