DESCRIPTION
Desk clock; France, late nineteenth century.
Gilt bronze and porcelain enameled and gilded dial. Onyx on the base.
It needs to be restored and has restoration on the base.
Measurements: 19 x 12 x 8 cm.
Sculptural clock of decorative aesthetics linked to the historicist and ornamental taste characteristic of the time. The piece combines different materials in a synthesis that responds to the decorative sense of the French watchmaking of the period, the composition is articulated around a globular dial, coated in an intense cobalt blue tone and decorated with gilded motifs of vegetal inspiration. Two winged infant figures, modeled in gilded bronze, support the body of the clock, configuring a scene of allegorical character that refers to the ornamental repertoire inherited from the Rococo and reinterpreted in the eclectic context of the nineteenth century. These putti, with their soft anatomies and dynamic attitude, introduce a playful and sculptural component that transcends the mere utilitarian function of the object. The dial, made of enameled porcelain, presents a delicate floral decoration that contrasts with the richness of the surrounding gilded bronze, while the onyx base brings stability and elegance to the whole.
