Valandraud, owned by Jean-Luc Thunevin, is, together with Le Pin (AOC Pomerol), the prototype and the model of those 'garage wines' that have broken the mold, driven the aficionados of great purchasing power crazy, and widely surpassed the prices of 'grands crus' such as Pétrus or Margaux. The vineyard of one of the new myths of world wine, Château Valandraud, has been deprived of its appellation of origin, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, and the wine produced there will have to be sold as Table Wine, which is the lowest appellation recognized by the European Union. The wine and its owner are thus punished for controversial reasons that reveal the growing divorce between great wines and traditional appellations.
