“Portrait of a Woman.”
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 73 x 59 cm; 96 x 86 cm (frame).
This French portrait depicts a young woman in a half-length pose with a serene expression and a direct gaze, dressed in an elegant gown with a wide neckline trimmed in delicate lace and chiffon, adorned with a bow and a gold brooch, while a rich damask shawl in coral tones drapes over one of her shoulders. Her hair, parted in the center and voluminous at the sides, reflects the fashion of the 1830s and 1840s. The figure is set against a barely sketched landscape background, rendered with soft glazes that enhance the luminosity of the face and the quality of the fabrics. The balanced composition, the refined idealization of the features, and the attention to detail make this work a representative example of French bourgeois portraiture of the period, influenced by late Neoclassicism and academic Romanticism.
