Of all the contributions made by the countries of Northern Europe to art history, none has achieved the enduring significance and popularity of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting. The works of Avercamp, Van Goyen, and Ruysdael, among many others, evoke the contours, landscapes, and atmospheres of the Netherlands more vividly than any other place—large or small—has ever been depicted. Dutch landscapes have earned a prominent place on the walls of major Western art museums, and today they continue to delight both successive generations of art lovers and painters alike. There is no doubt that the Dutch painting tradition, its various characteristics, and individual artists strongly captured the attention of other eras, a fact particularly evident in 19th-century Dutch Romantic landscape painting. Within this tradition, the most revolutionary and enduring contribution of Dutch landscape painting has surely been its naturalism. Seventeenth-century Dutch painters were the first to create a perceptually real and seemingly comprehensive image of their land and people. Although landscape as an independent genre emerged in Flanders in the 16th century, there is no doubt that this type of painting only reached its full development among Dutch artists. It can be said that they were practically the ones who invented the naturalistic landscape, which they established as a uniquely central feature of their artistic heritage. There is no doubt that the Dutch painter, brimming with pride for his homeland, knew how to convey through his paintings the beauty of its vast plains and overcast skies, the regular layout of their meandering canals and rivers, their polders and dikes, their beaches, and, of course, their spectacular stormy seas. Heirs to this aesthetic, 19th-century artists—such as the artist of the painting presented here—took it a step further, in a distinctly modern direction, playing with the expressiveness of the brushstroke and aligning themselves with the Romantic sensibility, which identifies emotion with nature. While Dutch Baroque painters depicted a landscape that was both real and exemplary—ideal in its timelessness—those of the nineteenth century presented a different ideal, one that was more emotional and subjective, far removed from the classical rationalist sensibility of their predecessors.
