DESCRIPTION

ADRIANUS DE BRUÏNE (Amsterdam, 1807 – Arnhem, 1870)
“Landscape.”
Oil on panel.
Signed.
Measurements: 36 x 45 cm; 54 x 63 cm (frame).

The painting depicts a peaceful 19th-century scene set in a dense oak forest, featuring a dirt path along which peasant figures, a cart, and animals pass by a stream. The composition reflects the characteristic features of Adrianus de Bruïne’s Romantic landscape painting, particularly his interest in nature and rural life. Notable is the attention to detail in the depiction of the vegetation, trees, and landscape elements, as well as the treatment of light, which creates a serene and enveloping atmosphere. The presence of human figures and animals lends scale and dynamism to the scene, while also introducing a folk-art element. The artist combines meticulous observation of the natural environment with an idealized and harmonious vision of the landscape.
Adrianus Hendrikus de Bruïne was a Dutch landscape painter associated with 19th-century Romanticism. Although he was initially trained as a lawyer—a profession he eventually practiced—he simultaneously pursued an intense artistic career. He was a student of the landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, whose influence proved fundamental to his career. In 1836, he enrolled at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam, and in 1839 he helped found the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in that city, serving as its first secretary. Beginning in 1845, he settled in Kleve (Germany), where he remained until approximately 1869. His work focused primarily on wooded and rural landscapes, featuring depictions of paths, peasants, woodcutters, and scenes of daily life in harmony with nature. Notable among his documented works are *Wooded Landscape* and *Woodcutters and Peasants on a Forest Path*. His painting is characterized by a Romantic sensibility toward the landscape and by his attention to light and atmosphere.
