Measurements: 33.5 × 61 cm; 40 × 68 cm (frame).
The painting belongs to the tradition of mid-19th-century British landscape painting, which was particularly interested in depicting the lakes and mountainous landscapes of the British Isles. Its execution, characterized by loose brushwork and a special attention to lighting effects, combines naturalistic observation with a picturesque conception of the landscape. Of particular significance is the stamp preserved on the reverse of the canvas, belonging to the London supplier Robert Davis, who is documented between 1857 and 1870; this allows the work to be contextualized both materially and chronologically.
