DESCRIPTION

EUGENIO LUCAS VILLAAMIL (Madrid, 1858–1919)
“The Bride and Groom.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 95.5 x 60.5 cm; 121.5 x 86.5 cm (frame).

With a distinctly Goyesque character, this wedding scene brings together the main attractions of Eugenio Lucas Villaamil’s costumbrista painting: rich colors, a variety of everyday figures, and a nimble brushstroke that brings the whole scene to life. The central couple makes its way through the crowd, dressed in 18th-century-inspired attire, against a backdrop of traditional architecture. The little girl with her doll, the women with fans, and the figures descending the staircase enrich the narrative with anecdotal details characteristic of the artist.

The subject is echoed in the painting of the same name, “Los novios,” part of the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, and reflects Lucas Villaamil’s interest in folk ceremonies and celebrations. These themes allow him to recreate a picturesque image of Spain’s past, featuring majos and majas and linked to the tradition of Goya that he inherited from his father, Eugenio Lucas Velázquez. In this painting, the festive atmosphere is conveyed through the movement of the procession, the variety of gestures, and the exchange of glances among the attendees.

Trained initially in his father’s studio and later at the Special School of Painting in Madrid, Eugenio Lucas Villaamil focused on genre scenes, bullfighting subjects, and “casacón” compositions set in the 18th century. His work continued the Romantic-rooted tradition of costumbrismo, adapting it to the late-19th-century clientele’s taste for anecdotal scenes and vibrant color. He enjoyed the patronage of José Lázaro Galdiano, for whose Madrid residence he created various mural decorations.
