As art historian Enrique Valdivieso, professor emeritus at the University of Seville, notes, these two paintings signed by Manuel Barrón and dating from around 1860 are a representative example of the artist’s Romantic sensibility and his unique approach to landscape.
Considered the leading Sevillian landscape painter of his generation, Barrón found in nature an ideal setting to recreate a serene and evocative vision of the rural world. His compositions combine a careful organization of space with warm light—in shades of gold and orange—that envelops the landscapes and accentuates their bucolic character. The foregrounds, filled with trees, shrubs, and human figures, open up toward distant horizons where light and color take center stage.
In *Landscape with Walkers*, the presence of a peasant couple accompanied by a child and a dog, seated beside a small stream, introduces a touch of intimacy and everyday life. In the background, other walkers blend discreetly into the surroundings. The combination of greens, ochres, and warm lights—balanced by the blue tones of the sky—reinforces the sense of calm and transforms the scene into an idealized evocation of country life.
For its part, *Landscape with the Algarrobo Mill* transports us to the banks of the Guadaíra River in Alcalá de Guadaíra, one of the locations that most captivated 19th-century Sevillian landscape painters. The river, the riverside vegetation, and the mill—recognizable by its crenellated tower—form a composition in which the landscape blends with scenes of rural life. A group of peasants gathered by the water’s edge lends scale and liveliness to the scene, while also highlighting the relationship between humans and their environment.
The significance of this second work goes beyond its descriptive value. Manuel Barrón was one of the first artists to discover the pictorial possibilities of Alcalá de Guadaíra, playing a decisive role in making its riverbanks, mills, and pine forests a recurring motif in Sevillian painting. His work paved the way for the so-called Alcalá School, which would be carried forward by later artists such as Emilio Sánchez Perrier and José García y Ramos Rodríguez, known as García Rodríguez. In this way, the landscape ceased to be a mere backdrop and became the protagonist of an artistic tradition in its own right.
Both paintings showcase Barrón’s most characteristic qualities: the balanced construction of his compositions, his atmospheric treatment of light, and a romantic vision of nature in which the landscape retains its real identity but is imbued with a particular serenity. The presence of figures, animals, and rural structures also adds a narrative element that draws the viewer into these scenes and gives them an appeal that goes beyond their topographical interest.
Manuel Barrón’s work is held in major public collections, including the Prado Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville, and the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga—institutions that highlight his contribution to the development of the Spanish Romantic landscape. His works are also found in other public and private collections, particularly in Andalusia, where his views of Seville and the area around Alcalá de Guadaíra constitute a valuable artistic and landscape record of the region in the 19th century.
