DESCRIPTION
A Philippine school, 19th century.
"Filipino Peasants."
Oil on panel.
Signed "Buruel".
Measurements: 13 x 25 cm. 22 x 34 cm. (frame).
The painting depicts an everyday scene in a rural Philippine setting featuring peasants, animals, and a thatched-roof hut. The work responds to a need to showcase the customs and folk traditions that characterize Philippine society. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, costumbrismo was an artistic movement that achieved great recognition. For Filipino painters, this theme took on great importance because, despite the Philippines being a Spanish colony, there was a significant lack of knowledge about both its people and their customs.
