RICHARD FUCHS (Berlin, 1852–1916).

On the reverse, a handwritten label identifying the landscape as a desert formation in Fezzan, in the Libyan Sahara, and the artist’s stamp “R. Fuchs.”

Painted in 1887, this work is an interesting example of the Orientalist landscape style of Richard Fuchs, a German artist who specialized in depicting scenes from North Africa. The work depicts a rock formation in the Fezzan region of the Libyan Sahara, a territory that aroused considerable interest among European traveling painters in the late 19th century due to the uniqueness of its landscapes and its intense hallmarks of light.

The composition features an arid gorge, flanked by large rock formations that draw the viewer’s gaze into the depths of the landscape. The absence of human figures accentuates the monumentality and desolate character of the setting. Fuchs builds up the volumes with precise, nuanced brushstrokes, alternating illuminated surfaces in shades of ochre, yellow, and pink with bluish and grayish shadows. The clarity of the sky and the intensity of the light reveal his interest in atmospheric effects, while his attention to geological details brings the work closer to a naturalistic conception of the landscape.

Richard Fuchs was a German Orientalist painter trained at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. He spent much of his career working in Italy and North Africa, specializing in desert landscapes, urban views, and scenes of daily life in Tunisia, Tripoli, Egypt, and Morocco. He exhibited in Berlin, and his career is documented in major artist directories such as Thieme-Becker and Bénézit. One of his works, dedicated to the art critic Ludwig Pietsch in 1909, is listed in a 1912 Berlin auction catalog.
