This painting is part of the Spanish landscape tradition that developed between the late 19th century and the 20th century, a period in which the depiction of nature underwent a profound renewal. The landscape ceased to be a mere backdrop subordinate to historical or figure painting and became an autonomous genre, capable of conveying atmospheric impressions, moods, and different ways of interpreting reality. Among its precursors is the landscape naturalism championed by Carlos de Haes, whose advocacy of direct observation of the environment helped establish in Spain a keen attention to the particularities of the terrain, vegetation, and lighting conditions. This tradition found new possibilities at the turn of the century, under the influence of Realism and Impressionism, which placed increasing importance on changing light, immediate perception, and freedom of brushwork.
In the work at hand, these approaches are particularly evident in the interpretation of light and the free execution of the pictorial surface. The reflections on the water and the alternation of light and shadow reveal an interest in capturing the changing appearance of nature. Nevertheless, the composition retains a solid structure, organized through the repetition of the tree trunks and the perspective of the path, which guides the eye toward the background and reinforces the sense of depth. The choice of a leafless forest is also significant. Far from offering an idealized or exuberant vision, the artist focuses his attention on the bare branches, the dampness of the ground, and the subdued color palette of the cold season. This approach ties in with a sensibility toward landscape that finds a source of aesthetic interest in everyday scenes and natural cycles, without needing to resort to extraordinary events or explicit narrative.
In the context of 20th-century Spanish art, landscape painting offered multiple avenues of expression: ranging from the continuity of naturalism and the Impressionist tradition to the most personal, lyrical, or constructive interpretations of nature. The work draws on this figurative heritage, in which a recognition of place coexists with an execution sensitive to atmospheric effects and the expressive possibilities of color.
