A Surrealist painter associated with the Spanish School of Paris, Agustín Úbeda was noted for his broad cultural background and deep knowledge of art history. He trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid and moved to Paris in 1953 on a scholarship from the Institut Français. There, he received significant recognition at the Young French Painters Competition and exhibited regularly at the prestigious Drouant-David Gallery.
Throughout his career, he received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize for Painting from the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 1980. In 1998, major retrospective exhibitions of his work were held in Madrid and Seville. His artistic body of work, characterized by its surrealist imagery, is represented in numerous museums and public collections in Spain and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art in Valdepeñas, the Museum of Fine Arts in Jaén, the Badajoz Museum of Contemporary Art, the Camón Aznar Museum in Zaragoza, and the Toledo Municipal Museum. His work is also included in collections in Paris and Geneva, as well as in U.S. institutions such as the Phoenix Art Museum, the Lowe Art Museum in Miami, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
