Winter scenes are one of the most characteristic themes in the work of David Schulman, a prominent representative of the Laren School. In this painting, the artist depicts a small, snow-covered Dutch village with houses featuring sloping roofs and bare trees silhouetted against a sky of golden hues. The loose, expressive brushwork, in the Impressionist style, combines the whites and bluish grays of the snowy landscape with the warm ochres of the buildings. The perspective of the road draws the eye toward the background, while the soft light lends the scene a serene and evocative atmosphere.
David Schulman was a Dutch painter associated with the Laren School, known especially for his landscapes and views of snow-covered villages. Self-taught, he began exhibiting in 1904 and received significant recognition, including the Willink van Collen Prize in 1909. He played an active role in various Dutch art associations, and in 1963 the Singer Museum in Laren dedicated a tribute exhibition to him. His work is represented in the collections of the Singer Museum and the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam.
