The work depicts a natural, mountainous landscape, creating a sense of depth through the juxtaposition of different planes and the interplay of evening light, in which the colors of the sky also play a prominent role. Standing out against this backdrop are the ruins of the castle located at the center of the composition, following a theme reminiscent of many works of 19th-century Romanticism, but with a somewhat different treatment, which reveals a certain influence from the aesthetic approaches and innovations introduced by the avant-garde art movements that emerged beginning in the late 19th century.
