After training at the Sant Lluc Art Circle in Barcelona, Josep Domènech held his first solo exhibition in 1980 at the La Caixa gallery in the same city. Later, he held solo exhibitions at the La Caixa de Pensions galleries (1983), the Fondo Internacional de Pintura (1985, 1988, 1990), the De Caso (1989, 1990) and Kreisler (1991) galleries in Barcelona, as well as at the Appia Gallery in Lyon (France, 1992). He has also participated in various art competitions, winning the Sala Parés Young Artist Painting Prize (Barcelona, 1974), the Honorary Prize at the First National Biennial of Art in Sports (1985), First Prize at the Martorell Art Salon (1987), and, in Terrassa, Third Prize in the Josep Marqués Drawing Competition and the Ricard Camí Prize. He has also participated in major group exhibitions, such as the one held at the El Cisne Gallery in Madrid (1979) and the exhibition titled “Contemporary Masters of Spain in New York” (1990). Domènech cultivates an intimate and poetic figurative style, characterized by atmospheres and glazes of matte colors—blacks, sables, and grays—which, supported by his expressive chiaroscuro and geometric synthesis in composition, bring his style closer to abstraction. His work is represented in the collections of the Government of Catalonia and the Museum and Center for Sports Studies.
