“Toward the Giants” is a contemporary interpretation of Cervantes’s universe. Don Quixote and Sancho, depicted from behind and on horseback, advance toward a landscape dominated by windmills of monumental scale. The composition combines figuration and abstraction through a surface of marked textural richness. Deep blues structure the space, interspersed with yellows, oranges, reds, and turquoises that introduce foci of light and movement. The windmills emerge from the layers of paint as forms situated between the reality of the landscape and the protagonist’s imaginary vision. The vertical line of the lance and the upward-moving arrangement of the figures direct the viewer’s gaze toward the windmills, reinforcing the sense of forward momentum. The scene alludes to the well-known episode from *Don Quixote de la Mancha*, but avoids a purely illustrative interpretation to explore the clash between reality, imagination, and desire.
Miroslav Spadrna is a Czech painter whose work moves between abstraction and figuration, creating an intense and deeply sensory visual experience. Self-taught in his early years, he had already achieved international recognition before studying fine arts: by the age of 25, his work was being sold in Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries. He was awarded the European Artist Prize in 2023 in Milan and was appointed Coordinator of Art and Painting in the Czech Republic in 2021. He has participated in group exhibitions in Spain, including one in Berja (Andalusia, 2023), and completed an artist residency in Garachico, Canary Islands, in 1997. His work has received positive reviews and has been featured in various media outlets. Since April 2024, he has been a member of the Chicote Visual Art Gallery (Spain).
