DESCRIPTION

Female mask, possibly a Pwo mask of the Chokwe people. Angola/Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20th century.
Carved wood, pigments, and plant fibers. Tubular appliqués made of plant material.
Measurements: 35 x 20 x 8 cm.

Anthropomorphic female mask associated with the artistic tradition of the Chokwe people, one of the most prominent cultures in Central Africa due to the extraordinary quality of their sculpture and the symbolic richness of their ritual expressions. Carved from wood, it features a face with stylized features, characterized by almond-shaped, half-closed eyes, an elongated nose, full lips, and a pointed chin. Particularly striking is the geometric decoration on the face, arranged in fields of dark, ochre, and bluish pigmentation, delineated by parallel incisions and curvilinear motifs. These ornamentations evoke traditional scarification and body-adornment patterns, closely linked to the aesthetic ideals and cultural identity of the Chokwe people. The mask is completed by an elaborate headdress made of braided plant fibers, from which numerous tubular elements hang; their arrangement adds volume, movement, and a remarkable richness of textures to the whole.

Within the Chokwe tradition, the female Pwo or Mwana Pwo masks are among the most emblematic expressions of their sculptural art. Associated with ideals of beauty, fertility, and femininity, these representations evoke the figure of the ancestral woman and play a prominent role in initiation ceremonies and community celebrations. Although they depict female characters, they are traditionally performed by male dancers, who embody through dance the values and attributes associated with women.
