This sculptural fragment offers an interesting insight into the production of monumental sarcophagi in Asia Minor during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, particularly the architectural style known as Sidamara, characterized by the extraordinary richness of its reliefs and its elaborate ornamental repertoire. The piece preserves part of a figurative composition in which an erotes, depicted as a nude child figure, confronts a feline, holding it by the head. The scene, marked by a strong sense of dynamism, is set against a background of carved and partially openwork vegetal scrollwork, accompanied by dentilled moldings. The contrast between the figures in high relief and the open spaces of the plant decoration produces an intense chiaroscuro effect, a hallmark of Roman sculpture from the Imperial period.

The work bears close formal parallels to the Sidamara-type sarcophagi preserved in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, especially the one from Ömerli, near Iznik, whose ornamentation exhibits an architectural organization and treatment of the plant motifs very similar to those of this fragment. Likewise, the famous Sidamara sarcophagus, from the Konya region and dated to the 3rd century CE, features scenes of erotes confronting wild animals on its secondary friezes.

Sarcophagi of this type, produced in the sculptural workshops of Anatolia during the Roman Imperial period, are notable for their complex architectural compositions—inspired by monumental facades—and for their combination of mythological figures, plant motifs, and hunting scenes. The use of deep carving and the trephine allowed for an extraordinary richness of sculptural effects. This fragment preserves precisely some of these characteristic elements, which allow it to be stylistically linked to that funerary sculptural tradition.
