BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Neoclassical-style jambs and lintel. Italy. Late 18th century.
Carved marble with relief decoration.
In good condition, consistent with its age.
Measurements: 295 x 185 x 28 cm.

This monumental doorway is a remarkable example of the neoclassical style applied to Italian architectural ornamentation of the late 18th century, a period marked by a revival of classical antiquity. Its strictly symmetrical composition reflects the ideals of order, proportion, and balance that characterized the architecture of this period, particularly in palace interiors and aristocratic residences.

Crafted from carved marble, it features a linteled structure consisting of two vertical jambs and a horizontal lintel rising from smooth transitional plinths at the base. The joints at the upper corners are formed by square corner blocks housing centered rosettes, elegantly crowning the junction between the vertical and horizontal elements.

Its elaborate ornamental design is organized around a central band featuring a succession of floral paterae set within circular medallions, linked by delicate scrollwork. This central band is flanked by a double molding of academic inspiration: a rich outer border of ovals and darts and an inner molding of subtle beaded moldings that frames the opening’s light. The regularity of the motifs, the precision of the chisel work, and the skillful treatment of the varying levels of depth create a refined interplay of light and shadow.

Its height of nearly three meters lends the ensemble an imposing, monumental presence and a distinctly theatrical character, making the archway the central focal point of the space. Both for the technical excellence of its sculptural work and for its versatility in integrating into unique architectural and interior design projects, this doorway stands out for its high decorative and heritage value.
