DESCRIPTION
Bronze wall sconce with an anthropomorphic bust. Rome, 1st–2nd centuries A.D.
Bronze with an oxidation patina.
Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses.
Measurements: 5 x 3.8 cm.
Bronze wall sconce attributed to the Roman period, decorated with an anthropomorphic bust in frontal view. The figure has a face with schematic features—prominent eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth—framed by wavy hair with locks falling over the forehead and temples. The torso is covered by a tunic or cloak whose folds, defined by incisions, form a composition of diagonal and curved lines. The reverse side features a concave cavity that suggests its possible function as an ornamental element or finial for a larger object.
Figurative bronze appliqués were widespread in Roman decorative arts, particularly as ornamental elements on vessels, furniture, and other household objects. The depiction of human busts and mythological figures was part of an iconographic repertoire that combined decorative function with cultural and religious references characteristic of the Roman world.
