Ask Alfonso why there are a thousand studs
This imposing pair of Lokapalas, or guardians of the directions, belongs to the tradition of protective figures in Asian Buddhist iconography. Their role is to guard sacred spaces and protect against hostile forces, which is why they were traditionally placed in pairs on either side of the entrances to temples, shrines, and, in certain contexts, funerary sites. Their watchful demeanor, military-style attire, and the presence of weapons or symbolic attributes precisely emphasize this protective role.
The two figures are depicted standing on large pedestals, clad in elaborate armor and wearing martial-inspired headdresses. The polychromy, dominated by blues, reds, greens, and whites, together with the ornamental details of their garments, lends the ensemble remarkable visual richness. The faces, with their stern and focused expressions, reflect the intimidating nature typical of these representations, designed to ward off negative influences and safeguard the space they guard.
This sculptural ensemble belongs to the context of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), a period of great artistic diversity in China. During the 19th century, the continuity of inherited traditions coexisted with new forms of expression and a growing openness to influences from other cultural spheres. Religious sculpture, however, maintained long-standing iconographic models, reinterpreted by workshops according to the preferences and needs of each era.
