BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Art Nouveau vase. DAUM NANCY. France, ca. 1900.
Acid-etched multilayered glass with a floral design.
Signed “Daum Nancy France” on the body.
In good condition.
Measurements: 18 x 11 x 11 cm.

This vase is a representative example of the Art Nouveau production of the Daum factory in Nancy, renowned for its mastery of glass decoration techniques and its inspiration drawn from nature. The piece stands out for its rich color palette and the delicate rendering of the plant motifs, characteristic of the firm’s creations around 1900.

It features an ovoid body, slightly tapered at the base and topped by an open-rimmed mouth. The decoration, created using acid etching on multi-layered glass, depicts branches, leaves, and fruits in shades of brown and reddish tones, which contrast with a background of intense yellow and orange hues. The chromatic gradation and the alternation of translucent and opaque surfaces lend depth to the composition, reflecting the naturalistic sensibility of French Modernism.

The Daum manufactory, established in Nancy and artistically developed under the direction of the brothers Auguste and Antonin Daum, was one of the leading figures of the École de Nancy, alongside Émile Gallé. Its technical innovations and unique interpretation of the plant world earned it international recognition, especially after the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, where it won a Grand Prix. Its works are represented in institutions such as the Musée de l’École de Nancy and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
