DESCRIPTION

FRANCISCO TOLEDO (Juchitán, Oaxaca, 1940 – Oaxaca, 2019)
“Mosquito Plate.” Insect Ceramics Series.
Ceramic.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 7 x 38 cm.

A unique plate by Francisco Toledo, one of the most significant Mexican artists of the second half of the 20th century, whose work is distinguished by the close relationship between nature, mythology, and cultural tradition. Against the intense red background, the figure of a mosquito in shades of blue takes on a striking visual prominence, creating a chromatic contrast of great expressive power. The choice of the insect as the central motif reflects the artist’s fascination with the smallest and often unnoticed forms of life, which Toledo transformed into protagonists of his own artistic universe, straddling the fantastic, the organic, and the symbolic. The piece reveals his unique approach to ceramics as an artistic medium, in which the tradition of craftsmanship becomes a vehicle for formal and chromatic experimentation. Far from a strictly naturalistic representation, the insect is integrated into a composition of a synthetic and expressive nature.

Francisco Toledo developed an international career that spanned painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. After training in Mexico and living in Paris during the 1960s, he incorporated diverse influences into his artistic language, fusing them with the traditions, myths, and Zapotec imagery of his native Oaxaca. Animals, insects, and fantastical creatures played an essential role in his work, rendered with an expressive freedom that blurred the boundaries between the human, the animal, and the imaginary. In addition to his artistic work, he was noted for his commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage, the environment, and indigenous communities. He was a driving force behind key institutions such as the Oaxaca Institute of Graphic Arts and the San Agustín Arts Center. Among his honors are Mexico’s National Prize for Science and the Arts (1998), the Prince Claus Award (2000), and the honorary Right Livelihood Award (2005), granted for his contribution to the protection of Oaxaca’s cultural heritage and community life. His work is part of major international collections, including those of MoMA in New York
