DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks; Murano, ca. 1970.
Blown glass.
Measurements: 41 x 13 x 13 cm (x2).
Both pieces feature a highly stylized vertical structure, divided into three sections. The upper section consists of a smoky-colored candleholder, resting on a flat disc of translucent yellow glass that creates a warm, luminous hallmark. The central body consists of a conical element of transparent glass, with a solid, faceted appearance, inside which an elongated core of smoked glass is integrated. This design creates an interesting optical effect of depth, refraction, and overlapping hues. The composition is completed by a base with an inverted flared profile.
During the second half of the 20th century, Murano experienced a new era of splendor in the field of artistic glass, establishing itself as one of the leading international centers for technical experimentation and contemporary design. The Venetian tradition of glassblowing, passed down for centuries by master glassmakers, adapted to the new aesthetic trends in European design, incorporating geometric shapes, abstract structures, and highly modern color combinations.During the 1960s and 1970s, Murano’s workshops developed particularly innovative pieces, characterized by the use of transparent and colored glass, internal cores, layered overlays, and optical effects achieved by manipulating the glass while it was still hot.
