This umbrella stand exemplifies the sculptural character that David Marshall imbued in everyday objects, combining functionality and artistic expression through the craftsmanship of metalwork. Its design features an oval-shaped structure, formed by thin vertical iron rods joined by riveted rings. Particularly noteworthy are the two bronze handles, with organic profiles and rounded ends, which mark a contrast with the body’s rigorous geometry. The combination of the iron’s dark patina and the bronze’s golden highlights accentuates its unique textural richness.
David Marshall, a Scottish sculptor and designer, settled in Spain in 1965 and spent much of his career in Benahavís, Málaga. His work is characterized by experimentation with metals such as bronze, brass, and aluminum, as well as by the incorporation of forms inspired by nature and erosion processes. His work encompasses sculpture, furniture, and decorative objects, always from a craft-based perspective. His work is represented at the Museu d’Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni (MACVAC) in Vilafamés, which houses his 1990 sculpture *Totem I*.
